2017 Buffalo Bills: Silly Billy Awards
After the end of the 2015 season I created the first "annual" Silly Billy awards which you can find here. After the 2016 season though, I never gave out any awards. So welcome to the 2nd, not so annual Silly Billy awards where the more ridiculous the award, the more it's coveted by the players and coaches.
Category: Least likely to trust the process
Winner: Marcell Dareus. He never bought into the new regime, so they shipped him out of town to Jacksonville with his pants (Mr. Big) stuffed full of the Pegula's money. I'm starting to wonder if the reason he wears a captain hat off the field is because he knows he'll never be a captain on the field.
Category: Best Buffalo Bills quarterback
Winner: Andy Dalton. Dalton could also win play of the year for the Bills but I'll leave it to just this one award. I want him to be hungry to win more Silly Billy's next year especially since there's a chance he could end up as the Bills starter in the offseason.
Category: Most likely to put players in a situation where they are unlikely to succeed
Winner: Rick Dennison. There's a reason why Dennison is no longer with the team and it's because he's throwing screens to Tolbert on third and long, and then not giving him the ball on 3rd and short to plow up the middle. Good riddance Rick. Your play calling will not be missed.
Category: Most likely to clap for himself while getting a Silly Billy Award
Winner: Sean McDermott. Who else could it have been? If you read my story earlier this year about his endorsement deal with the Clapper, you would have seen this coming from a mile away.
Category: Least fitting nickname
Winner: LeSean "Shady" McCoy. Not sure how we can continue to call this man Shady when he is damn near the only bright spot on the offense on a weekly basis. LeSean, I don't care if they call you Shady because you are the sunshine of my life.
Category: Defensive MVP
Winner: Tre'Davious White. This was a close match with Jordan Poyer and Micah Hyde but what gave the edge to White was the fact that he lined up against many of the top receivers in the league and held his own on a weekly basis. He's going to be a beast for years to come.
Category: Offensive MVP
Winner: LeSean McCoy. Shady made up 31 percent of the Bills total yards this season on offense while finishing 4th in the league in rushing yards and 2nd on the team in receiving yards. Oh, did I mention he broke the 10,000 rushing yard career milestone as well?
Category: Most repetitive name
Winner: Cap Capi. Nordly "Cap" Capi, made a smart decision when he decided to drop his first name in favor of the nickname Cap. Cap Capi, sounds a lot better than Nordly Capi, and that's why I was so captivated with him when he was called up from the practice squad. "Tricky Dick" Dennison was a close second.
Category: Most likely gambling addict
Winner: Brandon Beane. He came to the team and started wheeling and dealing players. He made some controversial moves that were interpreted by some "experts" as tanking. Beane hit the jackpot on his trades and the Bills were able to stock future draft picks, while also breaking their 17 year playoff drought all in his first year. He's owed a few apologies.
Category: Lifetime Billievement Award
Winner: Eric Wood. Despite the horrible news he received at the conclusion of the season that he could no longer play anymore, it was great that the team was able to make the playoffs once for their longtime center before he had to hang up his cleats.
Category: Best name on the team
Winner: Lafayette Pitts. It rolls off the tongue so eloquently while pleasantly stimulating my ear drums every time someone utters his name. Just like love, I can't explain it, but it's real.
Category: Feet of greatness award presented by Rex Ryan
Winner: Steven Hauschka. In the past few years, the Bills have used two roster spots just to have an average kicking game. They finally solved that problem with the addition of Hauschka who was brilliant in his first season with Buffalo setting an NFL record for consecutive field goals over 50 yards.
Category: Greatest Fullback in NFL history
Winner: Kyle Williams. He scores touchdowns on 100 percent of his carries and has never been tackled during a play. He probably won't make Canton as a defensive player, but he's a surefire first ballot Hall of Famer at Fullback in my book.
